Sixty Inches of Rain, Salt on the Wind, and a Gutter Sized for Both

The volume problem

Rain on this coast is not the steady drizzle other places get. A July thunderstorm can put an inch on a roof in half an hour, and a tropical system passing offshore can drop a season's worth over a weekend. Every drop that lands on the shingles has to leave through the trough at the edge, and when that trough is too small or packed with straw, the overflow runs down the wall and under the house. Most homes between Castle Hayne and Carolina Beach stand on vented crawlspaces, so a failed gutter shows up as damp and mold under the floor long before anyone notices a stain indoors. Hardware that ignores the salt

Within a few miles of the water, bargain steel fasteners start streaking the fascia with rust inside two or three seasons, and cheap miters open at the corners. So the aluminum run, the hidden hangers driven with screws instead of spikes, and stainless or coated fasteners are the standard spec here rather than an upgrade you have to know to request. Pine straw is the real enemy

Leaves get the blame, but longleaf pine straw and live-oak litter are what stop water on this coast. Straw mats into a felt that sheds nothing, and it arrives every autumn whether or not the gutters were cleaned in spring. That is why the guard recommendation depends on what stands over the house. Under pines or oaks a guard usually earns its price; on an open-sky lot it often does not, and the estimate says which house you have instead of selling every roof the same cover.

Fascia first, then the gutter

Years of overflow soak the board a gutter hangs from, and new aluminum screwed into soft wood is how a good job fails within a year. Every old run comes down with the fascia exposed and checked, and any board that has gone soft is quoted for repair per board before anything new goes up. Nobody should discover rot on an invoice. Where the wood behind the gutter has already given out, fascia and soffit repair is its own job, and it comes first.

One coil, one run per roofline

Seamless means what it says. The gutter is roll-formed from a coil in your driveway, so each roofline gets one continuous piece with joints only at the corners and outlets. Repair when repair is the answer

A sagging run, a corner that has separated, a downspout a storm knocked loose: those are repair visits, not the opening move of a replacement pitch. If the system is worth saving, that is what you will hear, and most fixes are finished the same visit for far less than new gutters cost.
