What the symptom usually means
- Waterfall over the front edge in heavy rain. Either a clog at the downspout outlet or a run that's lost its pitch. If it happens even when clean, the gutter may simply be undersized for the roof plane feeding it — see the 5" vs 6" guide before paying for a mystery fix.
- Visible sag or pulling away from the fascia. Spiked gutters back out of coastal fascia boards on schedule; standing water's weight finishes the job. Rehanging with screwed hidden hangers fixes the sag and upgrades the attachment in one pass — unless the fascia behind it has gone soft, which changes the conversation and the quote, honestly and up front.
- Drips at corners and end caps. Sealant ages fastest at the joints — sun on the south face, constant wet-dry cycling everywhere. Cleaned and resealed properly, a corner is good for years. This is the cheapest item on this page.
- Tiger-striping down the siding under the run. Chronic small overflow. Usually pitch or capacity, occasionally a seam in older sectional gutters — one of the few cases where we'll suggest replacing a run rather than chasing leaks seam by seam.
- Downspout swinging free after a blow. Straps rust and pop in salt air. Ten-minute fix with better straps; while we're there, we check every other strap on the house because they were all installed the same day.
After named storms: gutters make honest storm victims — wind peels runs, ladders and limbs dent them, downspouts vanish into the neighbor's yard. We do straight assessments with photos you can hand your adjuster, and we'll tell you plainly which sections are damage and which were already tired.
The repair-or-replace line
Our rule of thumb: if the fix costs more than about a third of what new seamless runs would, or if we'd be resealing seams on sectional gutters for the second time, replacement wins the math. Otherwise repair wins. Either way you get both numbers side by side and the reasoning in plain English — then it's your call, not our pitch.
